Escape Rooms – Our Beginner’s Guide to Breaking Out

Escape rooms are a popular choice among people looking for an exciting way to spend time. It helps to know what to expect in these rooms before going in; otherwise, you might waste your first few minutes figuring out your surroundings! Don’t worry, though—we have prepared a guide for beginner escape artists!

What the room might look like

Treat each escape room as a self-contained universe. On the surface, it will look completely normal; you’d feel like you’re in a real office, circus tent, prison, or wherever you’re supposed to be. However, the room will have its own rules. Upon closer inspection, you will notice locked boxes, doors, and items with dials, pads, or sensors.

When you manage to unlock these items, you can move to the next room. Some locks require teamwork to open, which will test your collaboration skills with your teammates. Keep in mind that the props—the books, computers, picture frames, or others—could hold vital information leading you to the next round, so examine everything in your room.

What you should not touch or do

Although you need to maximize your interactions with the room, some areas and objects are off-limits to you. For all players’ safety, avoid touching wall outlets or wires, ceiling tiles, bulky furniture, nailed down or glued items, and things that need force to move.

Unless instructions explicitly tell you to do so, do not climb walls or structures, break items, or stand on heavy furniture. Also, don’t take clues that are fastened to the ceiling or out of easy reach; you’re probably just meant to look at them.

Of course, cheating and taking the game too seriously are also no-no’s. You’re supposed to have fun in an escape room; sneaking a peek at the puzzles or being overly competitive will diminish the experience.

What to expect from the gameplay

These types of rooms do not reuse lock combinations. If you’ve opened a lock with one combo, it won’t work with others. Also, once you’ve used a clue, that’s it—don’t expect it to factor into other ones later on.

The lockboxes and clues will likely be near the next step; don’t move the items all over the place. This is especially true for compartmentalized maze-type rooms. Also, solve the puzzles! A surprising number of people approach these rooms with brute force tactics, which won’t work if you have only so much time, so try to break the code using the clues.

Protip for four-digit codes: do not solve the last digit! Once you have the first three, all you need to do is try out numbers one to nine until you uncover the final number. Doing this saves you seconds, which could be crucial when you’re winding down the timer.

Finally, figure out a way for you to divide the puzzles among team members. Only work together when the clues imply that you should; you’ll cover more ground when you split up into smaller teams. You must decide how to coordinate yourselves to get the best outcome.

Conclusion

Breaking out of an escape room is a fun, unique activity you can share with others. Whether you’re going through it as a team-building activity or are just looking for a new experience, these rooms let you form better bonds with your coworkers, friends, and family.
